On Oct. 14, 2016, students in the Business, Society and the Economy (BSE) College Park Scholars (CPS) program at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business celebrated the 21st Citation Class with an awards ceremony honoring students for outstanding achievement and outstanding citizenship for exemplifying the founding ideals and values of CPS.
The BSE award recipients were: l-r: Kathleen Curry, finance major; Daniella Mazel, marketing and management double major; and Sarina Haryanto, supply chain major with a minor in sustainability studies; Phil Royce, mechanical engineering major; Dr. Mark Wellman, clinical professor and director of BSE; and Claudia Donnelly, Assistant Director of BSE.
Freshmen are invited into the CPS and then choose between 12 unique two-year programs. "BSE goes beyond the classroom to explore the worlds of commerce and economics, analyzing business models through team projects and simulations that challenge students to think in new ways about corporate impact and leadership."
Wellman said he had a difficult time narrowing the award recipients to just four because so many of the 60+ sophomores who earned the Scholars Citation were worthy.
This year’s awardees were especially commendable however, because they designed and implemented an entirely new approach to the required first-year weekly colloquium. As sophomores, these four (plus six other students) led the entire semester’s course, enhancing the freshman experience and creating opportunities for their sophomore peers to continue to engage and mentor the freshmen. The group prepared a semester-long syllabus, provided a challenging and inclusive weekly class covering current events and activities affecting the business world and formalized the colloquium syllabus to insure continuity.
